This is completely normal and expected. To make shipping easier, pillows are compressed during transit, which temporarily presses the down and feathers together. When you first open the package, the pillow may look flatter than expected because the fill hasn’t had time to fully expand yet.

Even high-quality, clean down may have a mild odor—especially noticeable to those with a sensitive sense of smell. Heat, humidity, or prolonged moisture exposure can make the scent more noticeable.

To reduce or eliminate the smell, air out your down bedding in the sun for a few hours or tumble dry it on low heat until fully dry. Proper drying also helps prevent mildew.
